How to become a rail signaller

19 August 2026 · 5 min read

You do not start this job on a panel. You start in a selection process: an application, often a sift, then a psychometric day, then an interview and a medical. Training with the employer comes after that. Most UK signaller vacancies are Network Rail. Some operators hire too. Read that advert.

The work is routes, occupations, and not moving something you cannot prove. The tests look little like a signal box. They measure whether you can still be accurate when the work is repetitive, timed, or slightly unfair.

The sequence

  • You apply. The form is a filter. Situational judgement shows up here more than people expect.
  • If you pass that, you sit an assessment. Applicants say aptitude. Employers often say psychometric. It is the same family of timed tasks.
  • The mix moves: vigilance, concentration, search, memory, dual-task work, rules, and judgement. Some days include an interview and a medical on site.
  • If you get through, you train. That is when you learn the box, the area, and the rule book. Selection is whether they trust you to start that.

You do not need to have been a driver first. You do need to sit still and not miss the thing that matters. Attempts are limited. Walking in cold is expensive.

How the psychometric day differs from the driver day

The wrappers overlap. Vigilance, Group Bourdon, visual search, and reaction turn up for both. Signaller selection leans harder on holding several streams, remembering a layout, and deciding whether a route is proven. A named route through a junction is closer to the job than a quiz about liking trains.

No website, including this one, is the official test. Employers use their own batteries, timings, and scoring. Practice is for the type of work.

What to practise

On RailFocus you pick the rail signaller track when you create an account. The free modules overlap with the driver track: vigilance, reaction, visual search, problem solving, and Group Bourdon. Signaller practice also includes extra work such as route monitoring. Plus is prepaid on the website for 3 or 6 months. It does not renew.

Do at least one full-length vigilance run. Sit concentration when you are already a bit tired. If your invite names dual-task work, meet that wrapper before the day. A practice score is a training signal. It is not a pass.

Independent practice notes. This is not an official test, and we are not affiliated with train operators or RSSB.
