Do you need GCSEs to become a train driver?

19 August 2026 · 4 min read

Sometimes. There is no one national GCSE list. Some vacancies ask for GCSEs, often English and Maths, or an equivalent. Some word it more loosely. A degree is not what they are hiring for, and it will not skip the tests.

If you are asking “do I need qualifications to become a train driver”, the honest answer is: whatever that operator printed on that vacancy. Forum lists go stale. Read the advert.

What they are not testing

You will not sit a school exam about locomotives. Selection is a timed battery of attention, search, concentration, rules, and judgement, then an interview and a medical. People with degrees fail that day. People without A-levels get through it. The wrapper is the thing that spends attempts.

  • If the advert asks for GCSEs and you do not have them, the psychometric day will not save you. Check equivalents before you apply.
  • If it does not mention GCSEs, do not invent a bar from a thread about a different operator.
  • A degree is extra paper. It is not a pass on vigilance.

What to do if you meet the paper bar

Apply. Then practise the family of tasks so the scarce attempt is not spent on surprise. That is the part school did not train: sitting still, not missing rare events, marking the right clusters when you are already tired.

Qualifications get you through the door of the form. The tests decide whether they trust you to start training.

Independent practice notes. This is not an official test, and we are not affiliated with train operators or RSSB.
