Do I need railway experience to become a train driver?

19 August 2026 · 4 min read

No. You can become a train driver with no experience on the railway. Most new drivers come from other work. Operators are not hiring people who already know the cab. They are hiring people who can get through selection, then learn the traction, the route, and the rule book in training.

Liking trains is not a qualification they can use. Sitting still and not missing rare events is closer to what they test.

What they actually filter on

The vacancy still has a bar: age, right to work, sometimes GCSEs or a driving licence. Read that advert. If you do not meet it, a decade of spotting trains will not save you. If you do meet it, railway experience is not the missing piece.

  • The form and a situational judgement test. Defaults that look safe, not a story about locomotives.
  • A psychometric day: vigilance, search, concentration, reaction, rules, judgement.
  • An interview and a medical. Then training, which is when you learn the job.

What “no experience” still costs you

You still have to sit the day. People from outside the industry fail the wrapper, not the facts: a long dull vigilance run, Group Bourdon when they are already tired, a judgement item where the dramatic answer is the wrong one. That is trainable. It is not the same as having been a guard.

Practise the timed battery. Then apply. No experience is normal. Walking in cold is still expensive.

Independent practice notes. This is not an official test, and we are not affiliated with train operators or RSSB.
